May 14 - Sidney High School "Evening of Excellence"
Sidney High School is hosting an "Evening of Excellence" on May 14th in the middle school gymnasium beginning at 6:30 with a social.  An awards ceremony to honor students for their academic excellence will begin at 7:00 p.m.  The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

May 15 - Sidney High School State Track Send-off
Red Raider fans and the entire Sidney community are invited to a State Track sendoff at Sidney High School on May 15.  The sendoff is at 7:00 a.m. on the south side of the school.  The team will also be escorted to the Interstate by the local police department.

May 18 - Sidney Sluggers Baseball
The Sidney Sluggers are a brand new adult baseball team playing in the High Plains League of the Nebraska Baseball Association.  Games are Sunday's, nine innings, and played against other western and central teams.  On May 18th, the Sluggers open up the season with a game at Legion Field against the Sidney American Legion team, time TBA.  The Sluggers hope to generate a solid following and support in the community and bring the love of baseball back to the area!  Families and everyone are invited to attend the games and enjoy a night at the ballpark.  Learn more at the Nebraska Baseball Association website.     

May 21 - Business and Industry Luncheon
The Sidney and Cheyenne County Business and Industry Luncheon is being held on May 21 at the Sidney Holiday Inn.  This year's event will honor Dick, Mary and Jim Cabela for Cabela's 40 years of service in Sidney.  Tickets are on sale for $20.00 at the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce office (254-5851).  Nationally-known economist Jack Schultz will be the event's keynote speaker.  Schultz recognized Sidney as one of America's "Top 100 Rural Communities" under 50,000 population in his book "Boomtown USA".

May 21 - Special Region 21 Emergency Management Board Meeting
A Special Region 21 Emergency Management Board Meeting is being held on Wednesday, May 21 at 1:30 p.m. in the Cheyenne County E.O.C. at the Cheyenne County Courthouse in Sidney.  The purpose of this meeting will be to review and discuss job applications submitted for the Region 21 Emergency Management Coordinator position.  An agenda is available at any Region 21 Emergency Management office.

May 21 - Swimming Lessons Sign Up
Sidney swimming lesson sign-up is May 21 at the Cheyenne County Community Center from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m.  If you have questions contact June Katen at 308-249-5889.

May 25 - Sidney Sluggers Baseball
Sidney Sluggers vs. Grant at Legion Field in Sidney's Legion Park.  Doubleheader - 1:00 / 3:00 p.m.

May 25 - Handbell Choir Concert
On May 25th at the Dix Bible Church the Cornerstone Bible Institute will hold a handbell choir concert at 7:00 p.m.

May 27, 28, 29 - Summer Youth Basketball Camp
The Sidney Summer Youth Basketball Camp will run from May 27 through May 29 at West Elementary in Sidney.  Girls that will be in 4th through 6th grades will participate from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m.; 7th and 8th graders play from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  Cost is $20.00 and proceeds will go to the Sidney Lady Raider Basketball program.  Brochures are available at Central and West Elementary Schools.

May 28 / 29 - Sidney's Community Blood Drive
Sidney Community Blood Drives are being held on Wednesday, May 28 from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. and on Thursday, May 29 from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m.  Anyone wishing to participate can do so at the Cheyenne County Community Center and there is no longer an upper age limit!  Each donor needs to bring an I.D.  If you have questions, contact United Blood Services at 1-800-456-7057.

May 29 - EMS Workshop in Sidney
The Emergency Medical Services Program of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services will offer a workshop on "Lung and Heart Sounds" for emergency technitians, first responders and nurses.  The workshop is at Memorial Health Center in Sidney from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.  Participants will earn three continuing education hours.  Contact Wally at 1-888-216-3090 for more information.

May 30 / 31 - UNL Farm Equipment Safety Classes - Harrisburg
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is offering National Safe Tractor and Machinery Operation Program safety trainings on May 30 and 31 at Banner County School in Harrisburg.  Training begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends by 5:00 p.m.  Cost is $35.00 for materials, registration and the first day's meal.  The course is desinged for 14 to 15-year-olds who want to work on farms other than their parents', or who simply wish to have the safety training.  For more information contact your local UNL-Extension office.

June 1 - Memorial Health Center Scholarship Application Deadline
MHC Auxiliary is presenting four scholarships valued at $750 each to college students in healthcare related majors.  Contact Rebecca Phillips at MHC for more information and to request an application at 308-254-8093.  Applications and supporting material must be postmarked by June 1 and recipients from 2007 are not eligible for the 2008 scholarships.

June 7 - Dalton Volunteer Fire Department Fundraiser Golf Tournament
This tournament will be held on June 7 at Court House and Jail Rock Golf Course in Bridgeport.  Format is a four-person scramble.  Entry fee is $200 per team and includes a steak dinner following the tournament.  Payouts will go to the first, second and third place finishers in both the first and second flights.  To sign up and reserve carts call 308-262-9925.  The tournament is limited to the first 36 teams.

June 14 - Sidney Fine Arts Center Grand Opening
The Sidney Fine Arts Center will hold its grand opening ceremony in conjunction with Gold Rush Days on June 14th!  The gallery will be open at 10:00 a.m. and an open house will be held throughout the entire center.  Refreshments will be served and artwork from talented professionals and members will be on display.

June 14 - Sidney Gold Rush Days
The 5th annual Gold Rush Days celebration is June 14th in Sidney.  Activities begin at 8:00 a.m. in Sidney's Legion Park.  More details will be announced soon!

June 14 - 8th Annual Sean George Memorial Golf Tournament
This annual tournament will be played on June 14th at Court House and Jail Rock Golf Course in Bridgeport.  Format is a four-person scramble.  Entry fee is $180 per team and the tourney is limited to 32 teams.  All proceeds will go towards supporting youth teams from the Dalton and Gurley areas, which Sean so graciously supported and coached.  To sign up and learn more, call 308-262-9925.

June 20-22 Dalton All-School Reunion
The Dalton High School Alumni Association is organizing the 6th Annual all-school reunion set for June 20-22.  Individual classes and family reunions will be held on June 20 and 22.  This year includes the first six classes of Leyton High School (1979-1984).  Letters have been mailed out.  Pre-paid reservations are due by May 15.  For more information contact Linda Dykman at 308-377-2301.  If you have unique pictures that could be used for the reunion events contact Colleen Cruise in Dalton.  She's also looking for memorabilia items to make displays.
