SIDNEY, Neb. – For the first time in its’ 138 years, the Sidney Volunteer Fire Department Firemen’s Ball is going to have a dueling piano concert live at the event. Featuring two experienced pianists and their grand pianos, the Colorado Dueling Pianos are hoping to bring the house down on April 22 at the Sidney Elks Lodge.
One of the pianists, Ben Goodwin, has been playing the piano for decades and has specifically performed dueling piano concerts since 1987. He’ll be joined by another veteran player, Jami McNeil, for the show. A performance that will feature both playing popular songs, such as ‘Piano Man’, ‘Sweet Caroline’ and Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believin’, among many others, has Goodwin and McNeil both excited.
“We’ve been performing together for several years now and the next one is always just as exciting as the first was,” Goodwin exclaimed. “Every show is different, we never go into a performance with a song list, it just kind of flows.”
An integral part in a dueling piano show is audience interaction. The two pianists take requests from those in attendance and make it their personal mission to have your foot tapping and have you singing along.
“It’s as much of a show for the audience at it is for us,” Goodwin said. “We want to join the party too and audience involvement is crucial to having a great show, so we’re hoping for a great crowd.”
Goodwin is making a bit of a homecoming out of the trip to Sidney. Having grown up in Bellevue, Nebraska and earning a Music Education degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, he has extra motivation heading into the Firemen’s Ball.
“Being able to bring my talents back to the state is a great feeling for me. Add in the fact that it’s for a great organization such as the Sidney Volunteer Fire Department, and I couldn’t be more thrilled.”
