Cheyenne County gears up for Sesquicentennial and eclipse

SIDNEY, Neb. - Several Sidney hotels are completely booked for the Sesquicentennial events scheduled for August 18-20 followed by the solar eclipse on the 21st.

Cheyenne County Tourism and the Chamber have different festivities planned to take place all throughout Sidney and Cheyenne County. Kids activities are scheduled for the indoor facilities of the fairgrounds as well as family fun in the grandstands. There will be a quick draw booth set up where guns that shoot wax bullets can be fired. The county approved use of the courthouse parking lot for live entertainment and the city approved the “Sinful Sidney” parade that will go down Illinois street.  Also planned is a car show, 5k run, historical tours, beer and wine tasting and a volleyball tournament.

After the 150th anniversary celebration of Sidney concludes, there will be a viewing party at the Sidney Public Library for the solar eclipse. On August 21 at about 11:45am, there will be a total solar eclipse seen from Alliance. Library Director Andrew Sherman explained that Sidney will see the sun be almost entirely blocked out, although not quite as much as Alliance. The library will provide special glasses to view the eclipse.
