Former Sidney and Chappell residents helping with hurricane relief efforts

HOUSTON, Tex. – Two former Nebraskans now living in Houston have been helping with hurricane relief efforts News Channel Nebraska reports.

Tyler Dale, originally from Chappell graduated from the University of Nebraska at Kearney and now teaches physical education at a Houston elementary school.

Former Sidney resident David Gutierrez graduated with his Master’s Degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and now works for an oil and gas company in Houston.

The elementary school Dale works at is cancelled through Tuesday, but Dale considered himself lucky not to be hit directly by the storm and he felt like he needed to do something to help.

One of the high schools in his district opened up a shelter for anybody that was displaced where Dale worked a six-hour shift. Dale is also spending his free time helping the principal of his school, who was directly hit by the storm and is dealing with flooding in her home.

The Gutierrez’s dropped off donations at area shelters after seeking cover for four-straight days. David said it could be awhile before things are back to “somewhat normal” and homes in Houston could be flooded for months.

Gutierrez says his company’s president sent out an email Wednesday saying they will be open Thursday, but if you can’t make it, don’t worry about it. Gutierrez doesn’t think he will be able to make it to work until after the Labor Day weekend, because his route to work is under water.
