Wheat Belt warns the public of scam calls

SIDNEY, Neb. - Wheat Belt Public Power District is warning customers of scam calls. A system-wide call was placed on September 7 to warn customers of an old scam that had been brought back to life in the Wheat Belt territory. Impersonators call residents and tell them their power will be disconnected in 30 minutes if they did not call and make payment on their account.

To protect their customers, Wheat Belt staff decided to make the automatic call to all customers reminding them that Wheat Belt does not solicit payment over the phone.

“A sense of urgency is one of the tools these scammers use,” said Pam Wieser, Business Manager, “so a threat of losing electrical power in 30 minutes, insights panic, and may cause someone to make a mistake. We have warned of scams in the past, but would rather take the time to reach out to customers than have even one fall prey to these scammers.”
