Local authorities say possibly armed fugitive is out of the area

SIDNEY, Neb. - Following the pursuit of an armed suspect that evaded authorities in Cheyenne County Monday night, the Sidney Police Chief Joe Aikens and Cheyenne County Sheriff John Jenson said Wednesday (11/1/2017) that they haven’t had any suspicious activity reported, and they believe the suspect is no longer in the Sidney area.

The pursuit started in Deuel County when a State Trooper attempted to pull over a pickup that was reported stolen from Adams County, Colorado. The pickup led police to Cheyenne County at high speeds where the chase ended when the pickup crashed on County Road 95 just south of Brownson. Initial reports said the chase ended near the Cheyenne and Kimball County line, but Sheriff Jensen said that is inaccurate.

The suspect’s body or face was never observed by authorities. By the time the dust cleared and officers got close to the crash site, no driver could be found. A turquoise 1997 GMC Sierra Pickup Nebraska Plate 39-97R was reported stolen four miles from the crash site leading officials to believe it could have been taken by the suspect. The pickup still hasn’t been recovered. Officers also have reason to believe the individual was armed.

Jenson said that, “all three police agencies worked really hard on this, kudos to the State Patrol air division for their help, although weather drove the pilot out. He didn’t want to leave but had to.”

Both Aikens and Jenson said they were in contact with all school systems to let them know what was going on and to let them decide what was appropriate.

Update 11/1/2017 1:00PM: Cheyenne County Attorney Paul Schaub said that as the suspect search continues, Cheyenne County law enforcement officials are working with law enforcement agencies in nearby counties to expand the search area. It is likely that the suspect has left Cheyenne County. So persons inside and outside of Cheyenne County having information about suspicious activity are encouraged to contact one of their local law enforcement agencies. The law enforcement phone numbers for persons living in Cheyenne County are: the Cheyenne County Sheriff (308) 254-2922, Sidney Police Department (308) 254-5515 and Nebraska State Patrol (308) 632-1211.
