Dunning still at large

SIDNEY, Neb. - A convicted felon from Commerce City, Colorado who evaded authorities over a week ago in the Nebraska panhandle has yet to be apprehended, although Cheyenne County Attorney Paul Schaub says that law enforcement are getting closer.

According to the arrest warrant, Elijah Dunning 21, is facing five felonies: Theft By Receiving Stolen Property, Possession of a Deadly Weapon by a Prohibited Person, Possession of a Firearm During Commission of a Felony, Operating a Motor Vehicle to Avoid Arrest and Possession of a Controlled Substance.

Court documents say that on October 30 at about 11:11pm, a State Trooper attempted to pull over Dunning who was headed east on Highway 30 in Chappell for going 37mph in a 25mph zone. Dunning pulled off onto the side of the road near the east edge of Chappell, and drove off after the trooper approached the vehicle. After heading east for about 1.5 miles Dunning made a U turn and headed west back towards Chappell. Authorities chased the vehicle at speeds of over 100mph until Dunning crashed near Brownson and fled on foot.

In the reported stolen vehicle Dunning abandoned, authorities located a loaded handgun, glass pipe, meth, multiple identification cards belonging to multiple people, mail addressed to Dunning, a debit visa naming Dunning and a Walmart receipt. Officers were able to secure surveillance video of Dunning making a purchase at the Sidney Walmart just 50 minutes before the traffic stop.

Schaub says that although Dunning is believed to be out of the area, anyone with information should call the Nebraska State Patrol Troop E Headquarters at (308) 632-1211 or the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office at (308) 254-2922.
