Easements acquired for East Sidney Watershed Project

SIDNEY, Neb. - South Platte Natural Resource District (SPNRD) Assistant Manager Galen Wittrock presented the Sidney City Council updates on the Joint East Sidney Watershed Authority (JESWA) project.

The watershed area north of Old Post Road on the east side of Sidney is an area where rain water tends to run northwest towards housing development. The project will divert the water east around the college and around the east side of the soccer field into Lodgepole Creek. Easements have now been acquired for the lands involved in the project.

80% of the costs will come from the city’s sales tax. The SPNRD will pay 20% of the $1.27 million project. Beginning stages of the project began in August of 2015. Construction is expected to begin in early spring next year with completion in late winter.

The last heavy rain that flooded houses in the area was in 2004.
