Setup begins for Sidney’s Christmas celebration

SIDNEY, Neb. - City of Sidney crews have begun setting up for the holidays in Hickory Square. The Parade of Lights and Christmas Kickoff are scheduled for this Saturday, December 2. Beginning at 4PM there will be a cakewalk, ugly sweater contest, visits with Santa, s’mores, hot chocolate and a chili meal along with a heated tent.

At 5:30pm the parade of lights will begin at 14th and end at Hickory Square for the lighting of the tree ceremony. The Cheyenne County Chamber will have judges to determine winners of the three categories of parade entries: The “Merry and Bright” for whoever has the most lights, the “Historic Holidays” for the best demonstration of Christmas’ past, and the “Organization/Clubs/Schools category.

Sidney businesses can also participate in a window decorating contest. The three award categories are: best storefront, best door, best window, and the people’s choice award. The winning businesses will be announced after the lighting of the Christmas tree.

The Cheyenne County Visitors Committee will be sponsoring a house lighting contest. Judges will be driving the streets of Sidney December 7 and 8 looking for the houses that best show off Christmas Spirit. 1st place will win a $100 cash prize, $75 for 2nd, $50 for 3rd, and $100 for the Griswold Award.
