Hickory Square Park Project questions and concerns addressed

SIDNEY, Neb. - The public had an opportunity to address concerns and ask questions about the Hickory Square Park Project during a public meeting Tuesday hosted by the Cheyenne County Chamber.

The main concern the Chamber wanted to address is that the money to fund the project is not coming from tax dollars, rather grants from organizations that don’t have to be paid back, and can only be used for these types of projects.

Another concern of the project is that the park would be across the street from a probation office. A Sidney Police Officer said that the office’s proximity should not be an issue, as those on probation could have easy access to any park regardless due to the size of the town.

The Chamber said the cost to maintain the park should be very low, as the lawn will likely be astroturf, an artificial grass surface. The hope is to get a volunteer committee to do the little maintenance required of the park.

The plans for the park are not finalized, and a few adjustments may still be made, but it is estimated to take 3-4 months to build. Chamber President Denise Wilkinson said, “The crowd had lots of great questions and I think our presentation was well received.”
