Cheyenne County employees to undergo active shooter drills

SIDNEY, Neb. - Cheyenne County employees are going to be going through active shooter training. Ron Kissler, a Cheyenne County Sheriff's Office Deputy, and Sheriff John Jensen, along with an instructor from the Nebraska Intergovernmental Risk Management Association (NIRMA) will be administering the training at no cost to the county.

Kissler said that although there are already a lot of armed people in the building, they are looking at adding more to keep the employees safe. Kissler added that a lot of times when shooters come into a building like a courthouse they will be looking for a specific target.

There have been 238 courthouse shootings in the last six years, and 60% of shootings are over before law enforcement arrive.

The Commissioners approved the mandatory two and a half hours of training Monday.
