Great Trash Race results in 90 bags of garbage removal

SIDNEY, Neb. - Keep Sidney Beautiful (KSB) hosted the annual Great Trash Race Saturday morning in Sidney. Teams of community members were invited to spend a couple of hours picking up trash with the incentive of cash rewards for the top three teams who collected the most.

Four teams total participated in the event, the City of Sidney had several members partake in the Great Trash Race including City Manager Ed Sadler, students from Western Nebraska Community College made up another team, Dawn Graves and family another, and members of the KSB Board.

The primary focus of the four teams was centralized around the Interstate 80 area of town. The City of Sidney team collected 39 35-gallon bags of trash around the Loves Truck Stop area; WNCC worked along the I-80 off ramp and finished with 26 bags; The Graves family collected 13 bags made up of trash from the ditch along Highway 385; And the KSB Board group totaled 12 bags of trash from clean up along Glover Road near the Visitor’s Center.

Bev Arellano, Director of Keep Sidney Beautiful, was pleased with the overall amount of trash that was collected during the event, but admits there is still more work to be done.

“We are striving to be the cleanest community in Western Nebraska and we still have a lot of work to do, but we plan to have Unified Raiders come out May 15 to clean up Fort Sidney Road...I also hope to initiate a clean up every week if possible,” Arellano said.

Arellano asks that if you know of an organization or group that would like to help with a future clean up, contact KSB at 308-254-5851.
