State Treasurer candidate John Murante visits NE Panhandle ahead of election day

SIDNEY, Neb. - With election day coming Tuesday, May 15, candidates across Nebraska make their final push to sway voters in their favor. Current State Senator of District 49 and state treasurer hopeful, John Murante, visited Sidney and other Panhandle communities Wednesday on his trek across the state with the intention to spend time in all 93 counties.

Murante, a Republican candidate, ran for the State Treasurer position seven years ago with the idea that the state needed conservative leadership, a similar sentiment he continues to believe today.

“What we need in that office is someone who’s run a business,” Murante said. “Somebody who has a business background, who’s hired people, who understands the meaning of signing both sides of a paycheck, and I’ve done that.”

Prior to his work as a State Senator, Murante was the President and CEO of his family’s small business.

The State Treasurer position primarily focuses on adhering to the budget set forth by the Nebraska Legislature each year while ensuring that the money is distributed to the proper places and in the proper amount. If elected to the position, Murante has a clear idea of where he would like to start.

“My primary focus as State Treasurer would be to ensure that not  a single taxpayer dollar is mismanaged or misplaced, and also to try and root out and work with the State Auditor to root out waste fraud and abuse across state government.”

The opponent to Murante for the State Treasurer position is Republican Taylor Royal, a CPA and financial manager based in Omaha.
