SIDNEY, NE – The Cabela’s Athletic Facility at Sidney High School served as the arena for the Class C2 District 12 Subdistrict Final on Thursday evening as the second seeded Kimball Lady Longhorns (6-13, 3-6) took on the number one seed, Hemingford Lady Bobcats (19-5, 5-2).
Both teams ran away with their semifinal matchups on Tuesday with Kimball defeating Bayard 63-34 and Hemingford rolling past Perkins County, 65-16. Both the Lady Longhorns and Lady Bobcats met less than a week ago in Hemingford with the home team using a 23-3 third quarter advantage to win 55-29. With both of their seasons on the line, the two teams squared off for the C2-12 crown.
Kimball started the scoring with a layup from senior Alexus Lulf before Hemingford senior Faith Rohrbuck exploded for 11 points in the opening quarter. At the end of the first, Hemingford led by 9, 17-8. Instead of waiting until after halftime in this meeting, the Lady Bobcats decided to have their big quarter in the second. A 15-3 advantage, highlighted by eight points from senior Brooke Turek, gave Hemingford a 32-11 lead at intermission. Kimball’s leading scorer on average this season, sophomore Kate Reader, picked up her third foul of the half just minutes into the second quarter forcing her to have to sit a majority of the time prior to the half.
The Lady Longhorns came out of the locker room strong with Lulf, along with junior Justine Heeg, both knocking down two three-pointers in the opening minutes of the third quarter, but Kimball could never come up with a defensive stop as the Lady Bobcats outscored Kimball 21-14. The lead never came back within 19 points as Hemingford cruised to a 63-32 win over the Lady Longhorns.
Kimball was led in scoring by Lulf who finished with 11 in the game. Freshman Carli Wurdemann earned player of the game honors for the Lady Longhorns with her five points off the bench. The Lady Bobcats were led by 23 from Rohrbuck with two others scoring in double figures as well.
The victory sends Hemingford into their fourth straight District final. The Lady Bobcats will take on the Cambridge Lady Trojans (19-3, 7-2 C1-11) next week with a trip to Lincoln on the line. Kimball has their 2016-2017 season come to an end with a final record of 6-14, 3-7 in C2-12.
