NCAA tournament action opens across the country - Today's schedule

UNDATED (AP) — The NCAA men's basketball tournament gets fully engaged today, starting at 12:15 p.m. Eastern with a West region contest in Buffalo, New York, where No. 5 seed Notre Dame faces No. 12 seed Princeton. The Fighting Irish are the nation's only team to reach the Elite Eight in each of the past two years, and their six tournament wins over that span are a school record. Notre Dame rebounded from a four-game skid to win eight out of 10, and coming off a loss to Duke in the ACC Tournament final on Saturday.

In Orlando, Florida, Virginia and UNC Wilmington tip off in an East region matchup at 12:40 p.m. Eastern. This should be a contrast of styles, with Virginia's pack-line defense wanting to slow the game down and UNC Wilmington's high-scoring offense wanting to get up and down early and often. Whichever team controls the tempo probably will win. Virginia is the No. 5 seed in the region, while UNC Wilmington is 12. 12:40 p.m. Eastern

No. 4 seed Butler and No. 13 seed Winthrop get South region action started this afternoon at 1:30 Eastern. No longer a mid-major darling, Butler enters the tournament with its highest-ever seed. The Bulldogs limit mistakes, averaging a Big East-low 10.2 turnovers per game. Big South Tournament champion Winthrop is led by the dynamic Keon Johnson. The 5-foot-7 guard is eager to prove doubters wrong in his first trip to the NCAAs.

Gonzaga will be the first No. 1 seed to take the court in this year's NCAA tournament. They face the West region's No. 16 seed, South Dakota State, in Salt Lake City at 2 p.m. Eastern. South Dakota State is a bit scary. The Jackrabbits have won nine of 11, including three straight in the Summit League Tournament, where they were seeded fourth.

The East region's No. 1, Villanova, tips off tonight against Mount Saint Mary's in Buffalo. Villanova comes into the tournament not only as the overall No. 1 seed but as defending champion. No champion has repeated since Florida in 2007.
