Lady Raiders win a thriller in OT

SIDNEY — The Sidney Lady Raiders were 11-1 since the Christmas break. The Alliance Lady Bulldogs were 11-2 since the Christmas break. It was only right that the two hottest teams in the B-8 Sub-District squared off in the championship game Tuesday night at the Cabela’s Athletic Facility. The two teams met back on December 16th in Sidney with the Lady Raiders dominating 48-19.  But that was an Alliance team that was learning a new system under a new coach. Both teams knew that Tuesday night would be different. This time it took overtime for Sidney to win 50-49.

Alliance started quickly, jumping out to a 4-0 lead early, only to have Sidney respond with a couple of Katelyn Sylvester free throws and a big three pointer by Taylor Dormann to take their first lead. After the Bulldog’s Blythe Boness scored to put Alliance on back top, Dormann responded with her second field goal, this one a two pointer. Taylor Hopp would close out the first quarter scoring with a made free throw after being fouled on a lay-up, giving Alliance a 9-7 lead.

Sidney’s offense ignited early in the second quarter, as Meaghan Ross knocked down a pair of three pointers and Sylvester added a third. Alliance shunned the Raider onslaught and fought back to tie the game at halftime 25-25.

The lead changed multiple times in the third and fourth quarters. With the game tied at 47, Sidney had a chance to win in regulation but was unable to score and the sub-district final headed for overtime.

Ryley Rolls scored Alliances only points in overtime to give the Bulldogs a 49-47 lead. Katelyn Sylvester scored her only points in the second half to tie the game at 49. With ten seconds left, Matti Johnson was fouled putting back on an offensive rebound and made one of two free throws to give Sidney a 50-49 lead. The Lady Raiders had a chance to extend the lead when Meaghan Ross was fouled after a Sidney steal, but missed the front end of the one-and one.  Alliance’s senior leader, and leading scorer, Makayla Davidson weaved her way through the Sidney defense and was fouled with just 1.0 on the clock. But her first free throw of the one-and-one rimmed out and Katelyn Sylvester corralled the rebound to secure the Sidney win.

Meaghan Ross led all scorers, knocking down 5 three pointers, to finish with 17 points. Taylor Dormann sparked Sidney off the bench with 11.

The Lady Raiders will now wait for the B-6 Sub-District to finish on Thursday to see who they will host in a district final on Saturday.  Alliance will also wait to see where they have to travel to for their district final game. The eight district final winners qualify for the state tournament on March 1, 2 and 3.
