NCAA Tournament field set, Huskers miss out

Well in case you’ve been living under a rock over the past day, the NCAA Tournament field has been announced. The Virginia Cavaliers out of the ACC earned the top overall seed in the tourney followed by Villanova, Kansas, and Xavier. The last time all four No. 1 seeds made it to the Final Four was 10 years ago when the NCAA Tournament last wrapped up in San Antonio, Texas, which is the site of the Final Four this season as well.

In the Big Ten, four teams are dancing as the Purdue Boilermakers are the two seed in the East Region, the red hot Michigan Wolverines who earned the automatic bid by winning the Big Ten Conference Tournament are the three seed in the West bracket, the team they knocked off in the championship game, the Michigan State Spartans are also a three seed in arguably the hardest bracket, the Midwest, and finally the Ohio State Buckeyes earned a five-seed and will take on South Dakota State in the first round.

Former Kimball Longhorns standout, Mike Daum, will try to lead the Jackrabbits to an upset special over Ohio State this Thursday at 2:00 MST in Boise, Idaho.

The Nebraska Huskers missed their fourth straight NCAA Tournament despite finishing 22-9 and winning 13 conference games. It’s only happened twice in the history of the expanded NCAA Tournament (since 1985) that a major conference team has won at least 13 games in its conference but failed to receive an at-large bid. Those two instances took place in 2012 with both teams coming from the Pac-12.

So while missing out on the 68-team field, the Huskers will participate in the National Invitational Tournament beginning this Wednesday as they earned a five-seed in the tourney. They’ll hit the road to take on the Mississippi State Bulldogs this Wednesday evening at 7:00 MST.
